In den ersten Jahrhunderten nachdem der historische Buddha lehrte gab es kein Abbild vom ihm, sondern lediglich Symbole für den Buddhismus, wie etwa das drehende Rad der Lehre oder den symbolischen Fußabdruck. In dieser Anfangszeit des Buddhismus wurde der Buddha nicht als göttliches Wesen vorgestellt und verehrt.

Erst im Laufe vieler Jahrhunderte, in denen sich der Buddhismus im asiatischen Raum ausbreitete, bildete sich das Bedürfnis heraus, Buddha als ein strahlend göttliches Wesen zu repräsentieren und zu verkörpern. Dies zeigte sich insbesondere in der figürlichen buddhistischen Kunst.

Ganesha (Gaṇeśa) ist eine der am weitesten verbreiteten hinduistischen Gottheiten Indiens. In der Literatur, den sogenannten purāṇa, finden sich umfangund zahlreiche Beschreibungen Ganeshas, die sich sowohl auf seine Herkunft und seine Ikonographie als auch auf seine Bedeutung bzw. Rolle im hinduistischen Pantheon beziehen.

Ganesha hat eine Vielzahl von Namen und Bedeutungen, für welche er verehrt wird. Zu den bekanntesten zählen seine Rolle als Vighneśa (auch: Vighneśvara), der Beherrscher der Hindernisse. In dieser Funktion wird die Gottheit verehrt als diejenige, die den Menschen sowohl materielle als auch spirituelle Hindernisse in den Weg legen kann, diese aber auch beseitigen kann.

Als Spender von Wohlergehen und glückverheißenden Dingen wird er unter dem Namen Mangaladātā verehrt. Als erfolgsverleihende Gottheit wird er mit Siddhidātā bezeichnet. Als Weisheitsgott nennt man ihn Buddhividhātā, während die Bezeichnung Parmabrahman seine Eigenschaft als das höchte Wesen beschreibt. Ganesha wird auch gaṇa-īśa genannt, Herr der Ganas, einer Form von Begleitwesen im hinduistischen Pantheon.

Very interesting and rare cast bronze sculpture of Padmasambhāva in form as the Medicine-Buddha. This depiction fully emphasises on the healing nature of Buddhism. All eight Medicine-Buddhas are integrated into the lotos-base in form of a relief work. Tibetan medicine is closely related to Buddhism. There is a similar sculpture in the Asian Art Museum in Berlin, former Museum of Indian Art, inventory number: MIK I 9947.
